The Police Blotter, Oct. 10, 2009

A Police officer had to shot and kill an injured deer this week. And, police investigated several burglaries reported in downtown businesses on Friday.

An injured deer was reported in the 3900 block of Oakes Avenue on Monday, Oct. 5.  When a police officer arrived, he discovered that both of the animal’s rear legs were broken. Due to the animal’s suffering, an officer had to shoot it and put it out of its misery. 

That’s just one of the cases Anacortes Police handled this week.

Friday, October 2

An Anacortes man reported that his Ford Focus had sustained a football sized dent as the result of a hit and run accident while it was parked in the 700 block of Q Avenue.  The car appeared to have been struck by another vehicle, but no note was left.  The damage was estimated at $700. 

A couple who lived together at a home in the 1200 block of 17th Street reportedly argued about the man not helping to organize his things in the house.  The man allegedly got mad and threw the contents of his beer glass around the kitchen and then left on his bicycle.  The woman said that the man had not assaulted her in any manner.  The police were unable to locate the man to speak with him about the incident. 

A 50-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly assaulting her 72-year-old mother at her home in the 700 block of Q Avenue.  The mother reported that they had argued because her daughter had been drinking and refused to leave the mother’s home.  The mother said that her daughter had yelled and swore at her and that the daughter had pushed her and forced her back into a coffee table while ignoring her mother’s plea’s to leave her alone.  The daughter’s 12-year-old son intervened and pulled his mother away from his grandmother.  The daughter was arrested and booked into jail on domestic violence assault charges. 

Saturday, October 3

A 43-year-old Sedro-Woolley woman suffered a bloody nose after the pickup she was driving rear ended a car driven by an Anacortes man.  The car had stopped in its lane of travel to make a left turn, but the woman did not realize the car had stopped in front of her and struck the car from behind.  The driver of the car was not injured but the woman hit her face on her steering wheel.  The woman was also cited for negligent driving.     

A 24-year-old woman was charged with assault after allegedly punching an 18-year-old woman at an apartment in the 1100 block of 27th Court.  The older woman was upset because she claimed the younger woman had been making “romantic looks” towards the older woman’s boyfriend.  The older woman reportedly grabbed the younger woman by the chin and then swung and hit her in the forehead.  The two women, the boyfriend, and the younger woman’s husband had all been drinking together at the time of the altercation.     

Sunday, October 4

Officers contacted a 19-year-old man outside of his home in the 1700 block of 39th Street after he reported that his father had slapped him during the course of an argument.  The man had no marks on his face to indicate being struck.  Officers spoke with the man’s mother and father who both said that the father had not hit the son.  The son had reportedly been displaying some anxiety and nervous behavior throughout the day and throwing items around the house.  As there was no evidence of a crime, all parties agreed that the son would go to bed and call it a night.   

An officer stopped a car in the 1700 block of Commercial Avenue for speeding.  The driver was identified as a 28-year-old Sedro-Woolley man.  The man smelled of alcohol and, when asked how much he had to drink, he replied that he was “just coming from his parent’s house.”  The man appeared to have difficulty focusing in the officer’s questions and he finally said that he had “one beer.”  The man performed poorly on field sobriety tests although he told the officer that he “knew what he was doing” as he had recently been arrested for drunk driving in Bellingham.  The man was placed under arrest for drunk driving and a marijuana smoking pipe was located inside of his car.  The man was processed for drunk driving and provided two breath samples that were one and a half times over the legal limit.  He was cited for DUI and released to his mother.  

A 26-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested at her home in the 800 block of 29th Street on outstanding warrants for her arrest from previous DUI and malicious mischief domestic violence charges.  She was booked into jail.   

An officer stopped a vehicle driven by a 31-year-old Anacortes man in the 2600 block of M Avenue for having defective tail and brake lights.  The driver smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech and clumsy movements.  The driver said that he had three beers and he performed poorly on field sobriety tests.  The man was placed under arrest for drunk driving and a six pack of beer was located on the front passenger seat.  The man was processed at the police station and gave breath samples that were almost twice the legal limit.  He was issued a citation for DUI and released to a sober friend.  

A 46-year-old Anacortes man was booked into jail on investigation of assault after he allegedly grabbed a nurse at the emergency room and held or fell onto her.  The man was intoxicated and had been ignoring the emergency room staff’s directions to put his clothes back on and had been disruptive.  The man admitted he had been upset because he believed that the ER staff was mistreating him.    

Officers contacted a 50-year-old transient after employees of a care center in the 900 block of 21st Street reported the man was suspiciously trying to open doors to storage units at the back of the facility.  The man was extremely intoxicated and he had a warrant for his arrest from a previous DUI.  The man was arrested on the warrant but then released and transported to the emergency room for acute alcohol intoxication.  A portable breath test showed he was four times the legal limit if he had been driving.    

Monday, October 5

The window to a piece of construction equipment being used at a church in the 2200 block of H Avenue was discovered shattered by its owner.  It was unknown what was used to break the glass. 

An Oak Harbor woman reported the theft of her $2,000 bicycle from her ex-boyfriend’s garage in the 2100 block of D Avenue.  The woman reported that when she went to retrieve the bike, her ex-boyfriend told her it had been stolen.  The woman was suspicious and doubted the ex-boyfriends story.  The matter is under investigation.  

A vehicle parked in a marina parking lot in the 1000 block of Q Avenue had its rear window shattered sometime in the past month.  Nothing appeared to be missing from the van and an unknown Good Samaritan had taken the time to tape up the window in an effort to keep the interior dry. 

Tuesday, October 6

A woman reported that a total of approximately $1,000 had been stolen from her purse over two occasions during the past ten days.  The purse had been inside of the victim’s car that had been parked inside of a garage in the 3600 block of Malland Court.  There was no sign of forced entry into the garage or the car. 

A 23-year-old Anacortes man entered the police station and turned himself in on an outstanding warrant for his arrest for a previous marijuana possession charge.  The warrant had a two-day jail commit and the man was transported to the jail and booked. 

Two shopping bags containing assorted articles of women’s clothing were found in a portable outhouse at a construction site in the 1100 block of 10th Street.  The clothing appeared clean and in good condition, but with no identifying marks.  The items were placed into found property at the police station. 

A 21-year-old Anacortes man was arrested at a home in the 1800 block of 11th Street on confirmed arrest warrants for previous drug and suspended driving charges.  During a search of the man, an officer located a small amount of marijuana and a marijuana smoking pipe in the man’s pocket.  The man was issued a citation for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and booked into jail on the warrants. 

A 51-year-old man was arrested for domestic violence assault at a home in the 500 block of 35th Street after he allegedly hit his 45-year-old girlfriend.  Both people had been drinking and both people agreed that the man had struck the woman’s hand causing a beer she was holding to hit her in the forehead during the course of an argument.  The man was booked into jail.   

A resident of the 1200 block of 4th Street reported that $100 had been stolen from a hiding spot inside of his home.  The man had been away from home for a few hours and said that his door and windows had been locked.  There was no sign of forced entry. 

Wednesday, October 7

A man living in the 800 block of 37th Street reported that over the past month he was missing about 30 prescription medication pills from an unlocked medicine cabinet in his home.  The man said that his girlfriend’s kids had friends in and out of the house constantly, but that he had no evidence that anyone specific had been involved.  The man planned on getting a lock for his cabinet.  

Thursday, October 8

An Anacortes pharmacy reported possible prescription forgery after employees became suspicious of a prescription that had been dropped off by a 46-year-old Bellingham woman.  The prescription form appeared to be altered and employees checked with the prescribing doctor’s office and learned that they had not issued the prescription.  Police contact with the woman is pending. 

A 67-year-old Anacortes man was trespassed from a store in the 900 block of 11th Street after he allegedly harassed numerous female employees over the past few days and made them feel uncomfortable.  The man’s behavior included grabbing one employee and kissing her, putting his face within inches of another employee and asking if she was going to kiss him, and staring at other employees from an extremely close distance.  The man was taken into custody as he had two outstanding warrants for his arrest.  As court was in session, the man was taken to the police station/court facility where he was arraigned and then released. 

A 72-year-old Anacortes woman suffered leg and head pain after she was struck by a car driven by a 19-year-old LaConner man as she was crossing the street at 32nd Street and Commercial Avenue.  The car had been making a left turn and the driver did not see the woman walking in the crosswalk.  The driver was ticketed for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.    

An officer stopped a car for speeding on State Route 20 and identified the driver as a 28-year-old Bellingham man.  The officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside of the car.  When asked about the smell, the driver opened the glove box and showed the officer a baggy of marijuana buds.  The man was placed under arrest for being in possession of marijuana and another small container of marijuana was found in his pocket.  The man said that he had no idea why he would be arrested for being in possession of marijuana as it was a “sacred herb.”  The man was issued a citation for illegal possession of marijuana and released.  

A 20” Tony hawk freestyle bicycle was reported stolen from a home in the 800 block of 27th Street.  The bike’s lock had been found on the ground near the garage, but the bike was missing. 

Friday, October 9

A business in the 200 block of Commercial Avenue had the lock pried off the front door and a safe located inside pried open.  Approximately $200 in cash was stolen from the cash register, but nothing of value was taken from inside of the safe.  A witness had seen an unknown thin male dressed in black enter the front door, but did not call the police.  An adjacent business also had its door lock pried and twisted, but it did not appear that entry had been made

Two adjacent businesses in the 900 block of 11th Street were discovered burglarized with locks torn off their doors similar to the case above.  Various items in one business had been rummaged through, but only about $4.00 in change was missing from the cash register.  The second business had $350 in cash stolen from a cash drawer and a laptop computer stolen from a desktop. 

Officers responded to the emergency room to assist with a 26-year-old female patient who was being combative with the hospital staff.  The woman was extremely intoxicated and uncooperative.  Police and staff were finally able to get her to calm down to where the police could leave.  The woman remained at the hospital for treatment.
