The Police Blotter

A bicyclist was knocked off his bike on the Tommy Tompson Trail when he hit a cable stretched across the trail. 

An Auburn man reported that he had been riding a bicycle across the trestle section of the trail last week when he was knocked off his bike by a cable that struck his chest. The cyclist discovered that the cable had been strung across the trail and that he had not seen it due to the dim light conditions. An officer checked the location and found that someone had loosened one end of a safety cable and wrapped it around a fence post on the other side of the trail. A plank on the bridge also appeared to have been intentionally broken creating about a two foot hole in the bridge. The Parks Department was notified and will be examining the bridge.

Fri., Jan. 23

A man living in the 800 block of 36th Street reported that someone had stolen a 15-horsepower Evinrude boat motor off his boat that was parked in his carport.  The man also reported that his car had been prowled last November and that he believed that the boat motor may have been stolen at that time too.  The motor was valued at $400. 

A 16-year-old Anacortes boy was taken into custody at the high school for having a warrant for his arrest for a previous felony theft incident.  He was booked into juvenile detention. 

A resident of the 1200 block of 4th Street reported that someone had stolen a gold and ruby women’s bracelet valued between $5000 and $8000 from a jewelry box on his kitchen counter.  The victim also reported that he was missing a gold and opal ladies ring valued at approximately $700.  The victim said that during the timeframe of the theft, numerous associates of his had been at his house, but that he trusted the majority of them.  The victim did provide the name of a possible suspect and the theft is under continued investigation. 

A 29-year-old woman reported from a convenience store that her 48-year-old boyfriend had assaulted her at their home in the 1800 block of 11th Street.  The woman said that she had been awakened from a nap by the man swinging her five-year-old daughter over the top of her and hitting her head.  The woman said that she yelled at the man which resulted in him grabbing her forearms and then grabbing her by the throat.  The woman said that she yelled at the man to leave, and he then left.  The woman had visible marks on her arms and neck.  Officers located the man at the house and he denied having assaulted the woman by saying that all he had done was push her away after she had kicked him.  The man said that the woman had scratched him, but when asked to show the marks the man said that he didn’t have any.  The man was arrested for assault and booked into the county jail. 

Officers spoke with a couple who lived together at a residence in the 500 block of O Avenue after they had been involved in an argument.  The man allegedly became upset because he claimed the woman went out drinking frequently at night and left him home alone to care for their child.  The woman said that she had taken a friend home earlier and stayed at his house to “mend jeans” and that had upset her boyfriend when she returned home.  It was determined that the argument had been strictly verbal and that no crime had occurred.   

Sat., Jan. 24

An officer stopped a car driven by a 30-year-old Seattle man in the 1400 block of L Avenue after the vehicle failed to completely stop for a stop sign and failed to use a turn signal.  The driver had watery, bloodshot eyes, lethargic movement, a flushed face, and smelled of intoxicants.  The man said that he was coming from a downtown bar and that he had drunk “one beer and two whiskies.”  The man performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for drunk driving.  The man was transported to the police station where he provided two breath samples over the legal limit.  He was cited for DUI and released to a sober adult. 

A thirteen-year-old Anacortes boy reported that he had set down his MP3 player and headset while he was riding his scooter at the skate park. The boy said that when he returned to the items, the headset was missing.  Witnesses saw a teenaged boy unwinding the headset and then leave riding a bike, but they did not know the teen’s name.  The witnesses said that they would contact the police if they saw the teen again.               

Officers responded to a house in the 2100 block of 33rd Street after a woman reported that her 48-year-old mother was brandishing a knife.  Officers contacted the intoxicated mother outside of the house, but no knife was seen.  The daughter told officers that she and her mother had argued and that the mother had grabbed a steak knife and held it to her own throat while asking her daughter if she wanted her “dead.”  The daughter said that she told her mother not to hurt herself, but that her mother then slapped and punched the daughter several times with an empty hand.  The daughter said at no time did her mother threaten her with the knife.  The mother admitted she had held the knife to her own throat but strictly as a prop to make a point to her daughter.  The mother denied having hit her daughter.  She was then placed under arrest for domestic violence assault and booked into jail. 

Officers forwarded information to the State Liquor Control Board after an Anacortes woman reported that a clerk had sold her teenaged sons alcohol at a business in the 1700 block of 12th Street.  Officers later contacted the owner of the business who said that he checks customer’s identification, but that he sometimes makes mistakes.  A friend helped convey the officer’s concern to the owner as there was some question about the owner fully understanding English.  State Liquor agents will be following up on the complaint.

Sun., Jan. 25

A 23-year-old Mount Vernon man was contacted walking on Commercial Avenue after he had reportedly had acted disorderly at a nearby hospital.  The emergency room staff had reported that the man had thrown his discharge papers at a nurse and cursed at the staff due to his belief that he had received insufficient treatment by not receiving enough pain medication.  The hospital staff did not want to pursue any criminal charges, but at their request the man was told not to return to the emergency room.

A 36-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for allegedly assaulting her domestic partner at their residence in the 4000 block of Broadview.  The 34-year-old victim reported that her partner had started screaming at her over the break up of their relationship and then blocked a doorway to prevent the victim from leaving.  The victim said that the suspect then slammed into her with her shoulder and then shoved her off a bed.  The suspect also allegedly threatened to damage the victim’s car and injur the victim’s recently operated on knee while she slept.  The suspect denied having physically assaulted her partner and countered by saying that her partner had threatened her.  The suspect was determined to be the primary aggressor and she was booked into jail for domestic violence assault.  

Mon., Jan. 26

A woman residing in the 1000 block of 24th Street reported that her 18-year-old granddaughter had been swinging a bat around their home and that the granddaughter had also cut her own arm with a razor blade.  The grandmother said that her granddaughter had not been taking her medication.  The younger woman was contacted walking a short distance from her home and she admitted to being angry and cutting herself.  She agreed to go to hospital for evaluation and treatment. 

A Seattle man reported that his car had been struck by another vehicle as he was arriving at a motel parking lot in the 7600 block of State Route 20.  The man said that the other vehicle had been leaving the lot at a high rate of speed, struck his car, and then stopped in an adjacent gravel lot.  The man said that he approached and spoke with the other driver to exchange information, but that the other driver drove away before providing any information.  The man said the other vehicle had been a blue Jeep and that the driver had been a man is his late teens or early twenties wearing pajamas.  The victim provided a partial license number for the Jeep and the incident is under continued investigation.   

Tues., Jan. 27

A man living in the 1700 block of Skyline Way went outside to investigate after hearing a banging sound coming from the area of his parked pickup.  The man discovered an unknown man inside of his pickup who fled on foot when he saw the victim approaching.  The victim discovered his driver’s side wing window had been broken out and the vehicles ignition had been damaged in an attempt to possibly steal the pickup.  The suspect left behind a car seat organizer containing items that did not come from the victim’s vehicle.  Officers checked the area for the suspect but were unable to locate him.  He was described as a white male with curly brown hair wearing a long dark jacket and dark pants.                                                    

In a possibly related incident, a resident of the 1800 block of Lea Place reported that someone had attempted to steal his Honda Civic.  The victim reported that he had exited his house and discovered his car was not in its usual parking space but rather parked down the road.  Upon inspection, he found the driver’s door had been pried and the ignition had been tampered with and damaged.  It was believed that the unknown suspect had rolled the vehicle downhill before trying to tamper with the ignition to start the car.  Damage to the car was estimated at $500. 

A resident of the 1100 block of 14th Street reported that approximately two weeks prior, someone had entered his unlocked Chevy Suburban and stole two portable CD players, ten CD’s, a book on tape, and two pairs of headphones.  The total loss was estimated at $500. 

A 43-year-old Anacortes man reported that he had been punched in the head by a 24-year-old Anacortes woman who was a friend of his girlfriend at his residence in the 1100 block of 4th Street.  The woman had then left on foot.  The man said that he had just wanted the woman to leave his apartment because she had been drinking.  The man had redness to his neck, but he said that he did not want to pursue any criminal charges against the woman.

A burglary was reported to a residence in the 2300 block of D Avenue in which two computers were stolen.  There was no sign of forced entry into the house, but the homeowner provided the first name of a person who had been visiting at the house as a possible suspect.  The incident is under continued investigation. 

Wed., Jan. 28

An 18-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for domestic violence malicious mischief after she argued with her grandmother and then smashed a mirror with a baseball bat at their home in the 1000 block of 24th Street.  The granddaughter also allegedly threatened to throw her shoes at her grandmother which she had reportedly done in the past.  The woman was booked into the county jail. 

An employee of a medical facility in the 1500 block of Commercial Avenue reported that during the previous night someone had thrown a large rock through a plate glass window on the north side of the business.  The rock was thrown with such force that it passed through the glass and landed over 25 feet away from the window inside of the building.  It was reported that a person of interest was a man who had been angry the previous day for being refused narcotics.   The matter is under investigation. 

A woman living in the 5800 block of Sands Way reported that someone had attempted to steal her Ford pickup during the previous night.  The victim discovered that the rear slider window had been broken and that someone had entered the pickup and tampered with the ignition.  The ignition was damaged to the point to where the vehicle no longer would start.  The center console was also damaged and the total estimated damage exceeded $800. 

A Guemes Island man discovered a tire to his Ford pickup had been slashed while he had been parked at the City library.  The tire will have to be replaced and it was unknown who caused the damage. 

Thurs., Jan. 29

A woman living in the 2000 block of J Avenue discovered that someone had spray-painted a derogatory comment about her daughter on her garage door during the previous night.  The writing was in red spray paint. 

In what the police belived to be related incidents, graffiti using red spray paint was also reported at the following locations using the shown case numbers:                     

Derogatory word spray painted in “gang style script” on garage door in 1400 block of 11th Street.
Letters “WLF” spray painted on garage wall in the 1400 block of 10th Street. 
Red spray paint consisting of “gang type signs” sprayed onto the dugouts and sand at a park in the 1900 block of 13th Street.  A damage estimate is pending from the Parks Department. 
Red spray painted graffiti in the alleyway on two properties in the 1500 block of 7th Street.  
  
The landlord of a house in the 2200 block of Dublin Place reported that he believed that his former tenants who moved out last December had stolen a garbage can valued at $20 when they left.  The man said that the couple also owed him $3000 in back rent and that he was filing a lawsuit through small claims court to recoup his losses.  The man said that he had no idea where the couple had moved. 

A man who had just recently moved to Anacortes reported that someone had prowled his car while it had been parked in the 1000 block of 7th Street.  The man said that the vehicle had been left locked and that it was alarmed, but there was no sign of forced entry.  The driver’s side mirror had been broken off though.  Stolen from inside of the car was a six disc CD changer, a leather jacket, a fleece jacket, a multi-meter tool, a socket set, a drill, a camera, camera lenses, and a telescope style spotting scope.  The estimated loss was valued at over $3000.00. 

An officer observed a 54-year-old Anacortes man walk into a residence in the 900 block of 25th Street.  The officer recognized the man as the same person he had arrested a few days earlier at the house for a domestic violence offense.  A records check showed a valid court order that prohibited the man from being at the residence.  The man was contacted at the house and taken into custody for violation of a no-contact order.  He was booked into the county jail. 

Fri., Jan. 30

An officer stopped a car in the 900 block of 35th Street after learning that the registered owner and driver had two confirmed warrants for his arrest.  Upon his arrest, the 18-year-old driver told the officer that he had a marijuana smoking pipe in the center consol of his car.  The officer located the pipe and a baggy that contained trace amounts of suspected marijuana.  The man was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.  He was released after receiving new court appearance dates on the warrants as the jail would not accept him for booking. 

Officers responded to the report of a burglary that occurred overnight at the Anacortes High School.  School staff had discovered a broken window on the north side of a classroom that appeared to have the glass broken inward.  A moveable cart inside the classroom had been knocked over and a flat screen high definition television was missing from the cart.  The television was valued at $750.  The crime is under further investigation. 

A local realtor reported the theft of a folding real estate sign that had been set-up in the area of 18th Street and Commercial Avenue.  The sign was reported to be new and valued at $150.
