A resident of the 4500 block of Anaco Beach Road reported that her son had awakened to a blonde female in her 30’s wearing neatly done make-up and stiletto heels inside their house. The son told the strange woman to leave, and the stranger apparently asked “Would you like me to turn the light off?” The mother then also told the stranger to leave and described her as “superwoman” as the stranger reportedly jumped over two crab pots and a retaining wall as she left. The mother reported that the stranger was calm and polite, but was possibly under the influence of drugs. The mother reported the incident due to past burglar activity in the neighborhood.

A resident of the 2600 block of Shannon Point Road reported that someone had entered his residence through an unlocked window and stole a fire safe box containing birth certificates, social security cards, and savings bonds. The victim also reported that approximately $4400 in women’s jewelry had been stolen.
An Anacortes woman reported that her son had a vehicle for sale on Craig’s List and that he had received a check from a perspective buyer in Colorado that was $3300 over the asked for price of the vehicle. The buyer asked that the difference be sent back via Western Union. The woman checked with her bank and discovered that the check was no good prior to sending the prospective buyer any money. The woman was informed that this was a classic scam and that she had been smart to check with her bank prior to sending any money.
The victim of a burglary in the 2600 block of Shannon Point Road checked his neighbor’s house as they had been gone for a few weeks and discovered an unsecured door. The victim’s neighbor and an officer then checked the house and discovered opened drawers and items scattered on the floor. The homeowner was contacted by phone and confirmed that the house should have been locked. Investigation is continuing to determine if anything is missing.
August 23
An officer stopped a vehicle in the 2300 block of Commercial Avenue for driving without the headlights being on. The officer smelled the strong odor marijuana coming from inside of the car. When asked about the odor, the 18-year-old Anacortes man said he didn’t know what the officer was talking about. The man was arrested for investigation of being in possession of marijuana and he then admitted that he had earlier smoked marijuana in the car. A search of the vehicle revealed a smoking pipe containing burnt marijuana and five unopened cans of beer. When asked about the beer, the man said that he was “hammered.” The man was then processed for DUI and provided two breath samples over the legal adult limit. The man was issued citations for drunk driving and possession of drug paraphernalia and released.
An officer stopped a car for speeding and straddling the center line on A Avenue near Parkside. The driver, a 17-year-old Anacortes boy, smelled strongly of intoxicants and showed other signs of intoxication. The driver admitted to drinking and said that everyone else in the car had been drinking too. The driver performed poorly on sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for DUI and underage drinking. Four other teenagers in the car from Anacortes showed the effects of drinking alcohol and said they had been drinking at a party in Oak Harbor. The passengers were all charged with underage drinking and released. The driver was processed for drunk driving and provided breath samples that were approximately twice the legal limit for an adult. He was released to his father.
A couple residing on Dublin Place who had been married for 56 years got into an argument about the husband being tired of the way his wife did things. The man said he made a comment that he was so mad he could “blow his wife’s head off” but his wife said that she had not been threatened. The woman said that she felt safe with her husband and she declined to leave the house. It was determined that no crime had occurred and the couple said there would be no further problems.
Officers responded to the area of Little Cranberry Lake regarding the report of four juveniles chopping down a tree in the forest lands. Officer found a freshly cut tree and an old axe, but the juveniles were gone.
A 54-year-old Burlington man was stopped on SR 20 near Padilla heights Road after it was reported that the car he was driving struck a curb near the highway and almost hit a car it was following. The driver had slurred speech and glassy eyes and admitted he had a few drinks at a friend’s house in Oak Harbor. The man performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was arrested for drunk driving. He was processed for DUI and provided two breath samples that were approximately two and a half times the legal limit. He was released to his sober wife.
Officers responded to the report of a possible fight at a house in the 3900 block of M Avenue. Several people fled the house prior to officer’s arrival. A 22-year-old resident of the house was contacted behind the house after he tried to run through some brush. The man had two outstanding warrants for his arrest out of Island County for DUI and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was turned over to an Island County Sheriff’s Deputy.
August 24
A car was stopped for speeding and driving erratically in the 1200 block of I Avenue. The car also struck a tree stump just prior to the stop. The driver was identified as a 22-year-old Anacortes woman and she admitted she had been drinking since getting off work at a downtown bar. She performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was arrested for drunk driving. The woman declined to give a breath sample and she was cited for drunk driving and released to a sober adult.
Officers contacted a woman after she reported her soon-to-be ex-husband was drunk and screaming at their home in the 800 block of 27th Street. Officers spoke with the couple and learned that the man was unhappy with his wife for allowing her new boyfriend to sleep at the house while they still lived together. No crime had occurred and the woman and her new boyfriend left the residence.
Officers responded to a home in the 900 block of 25th Street after a man had called 911 to report his live-in girlfriend had tried to stab him and then the call was disconnected. Upon arrival, the man told officers that his girlfriend and he had argued and that she had threatened to stab him with a knife. The man said that the woman then retrieved a knife and lunged at him while he was calling 911. The man said the woman slapped the phone from his hand and then fled the residence. The woman was arrested a short time later when she was walking back to the house. She admitted she had threatened to stab the man and knocking the phone from his hand, but she denied she ever actually picked up a knife. She was booked into jail for investigation of felony domestic violence assault.
An employee of a car dealership on Thompson Road reported that someone had stolen the fiberglass convertible top from a Honda that had been parked on the lot for sale. Both of the car’s side windows were smashed to allow the thieves to remove the roof. The roof was valued at $3,400.
A Mount Vernon woman reported that she had forgotten her purse at a restaurant in the 2800 block of Commercial Avenue. When she returned to look for her purse, it was gone. Later that day, a man found the purse in the 2200 block of Minnesota Avenue and took it to the police station. The only thing discovered missing from the purse was a pack of cigarettes.
Officers contacted a married couple in the 1000 block of Fidalgo Avenue after the couple had gotten in to an argument about the woman serving the man with divorce papers. No crime occurred and the woman voluntarily left the house for the night.
August 25
A man and his wife were awakened when they heard a loud crash at their home in the 1800 block of 8th Street. When they investigated, they found an exterior door had its window shattered and the door was standing open. The couple discovered that someone had entered the house and stole the woman’s purse containing her ID, cash, and credit cards. A K-9 unit attempted to track the suspect without success.
A dental office in the 1200 block of 29th Street was vandalized by someone spray painting graffiti on a fence.
Officers contacted two 17-year-old Anacortes boys in the woods near a school in the 1400 block of 41st Street after a witness reported having seen a possible “drug deal” in the area. A baggy of suspected marijuana was found on the ground near one of the boys and the other smelled strongly of marijuana. The boys were detained for investigation of possession of marijuana. They admitted that one of the boys had possessed the marijuana and the other possessed a marijuana smoking pipe that was located in his pocket. The boys were later referred to Juvenile Court for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia charges.
A resident of the 1100 block of 32nd Street reported the theft of approximately nine gallons of gas from his vehicle that was parked outside of his home.
A 26-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for investigation of first degree assault after he allegedly stabbed his brother in the back with a knife at their home in the 2900 block of Q Avenue. The suspect was arrested a few blocks from the house after he fled on foot. The suspect admitted that he had stabbed his brother because he was upset his brother had called him a derogatory name and was touching his possessions. The victim was treated at the local emergency room for non life threatening injuries and he returned home later that day.
August 26
A Guemes Island resident reported the theft of a hood ornament from her car that was parked near the Guemes Ferry dock.
An Anacortes woman reported the theft of an 18-speed mountain bike from outside of a cinema in the 400 block of O Avenue.
A Bow resident reported the theft of his boat and motor from a dock at a marina in the 1100 block of Q Avenue. The boat was found the next day at an adjacent dock with the keys in it and nothing missing.
A 54-year-old Mount Vernon woman wrote a check to a business in the 1000 block of 11th Street on a closed account. She was contacted by an officer and agreed to pay for the check at the satisfaction of the business owner.
August 27
An Anacortes woman was awakened at her home in the 3900 block of Broadview Drive when she heard her front door slam. She investigated and found that someone had stolen her purse from her bedroom and that the back door to the house had probably been left unlocked. A short time later, the woman learned from her bank that someone had tried to use her debit card that had been inside of her purse. The woman provided possible suspect information and the matter is under investigation.
The owner of a salvage yard in the 9300 block of Padilla Heights Road reported that someone had damaged the windshields to approximately twenty vehicles on his property by shooting them with a BB gun over the past week. The victim estimated the window replacement cost at $200 each.
A 14-year-old Anacortes boy reported the theft of his $600 mountain bike from where he had hidden it in some bushes at a friend’s house in the 1100 block of 9th Street.
Two vehicles were reported to have been “keyed” while parked behind a business in the 900 block of 11th Street within the past week. The victim’s discovered scratches to the hoods and sides of their cars and the damage was estimated at $300 to each car.
Officers responded to a two car non-injury accident that was blocking the roadway at Commercial Avenue and Highway 20. The driver of a pickup, a 40-year-old Anacortes man, had failed to stop for a stop sign and struck a vehicle driven by a 50-year-old Marysville woman. An officer smelled intoxicants on the man who was also unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech. The man performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for drunk driving. He provided two breath samples that were almost twice the legal limit. The man was cited for DUI, negligent driving, and having no insurance.
A 27-year-old Tacoma man was detained by US Border Patrol agents at the State Ferry terminal after a marijuana smoking pipe was found in the car he was driving. The man was driving a car with British Columbia license plates, had a Connecticut driver’s license, and had no registration or proof of ownership for the car. Residue in the pipe tested positive for marijuana and the man was cited and released for possession of drug paraphernalia.
August 28
A 35-year-old Spokane man reported that someone else had been driving a car that left the road and crashed through decorative concrete landscaping at a home in the area of 12th Street and D Avenue. The man, who appeared to be intoxicated and was the only person at the accident scene, claimed that an unknown man he had met in a downtown bar had offered to drive him home due to his drinking. An officer located three other people walking several blocks away who said that they had been passengers in the wrecked car and that the man at the scene was the driver and had been “driving like an idiot.” The driver was placed under arrest for drunk driving and provided breath samples that were twice the legal limit. He was cited and released for DUI and providing a false statement to a public servant.
A woman living in the 1600 block of 39th Street reported that someone had thrown the garbage from her can around her lawn, uprooted plants in her yard and dumped out potted plants, threw dirt around her yard, broke her yard lights, broke off flowers, and covered her flower beds with toilet paper. A neighbor’s yard had also been covered with toilet paper.
An employee of a business in the 1000 block of 24th Street reported that someone had painted black colored graffiti on the side of the building. Cleanup cost was estimated at $300.
Two neighbors in the area of the 1100 block of 16th Street reported that someone had ripped the side mirrors off their vehicles sometime during the previous night. Replacement cost was estimated at $200 each.
A citizen called in seeing a man who appeared to be intoxicated driving away from a store after purchasing beer. The witness provided a license number for the car and an officer stopped the vehicle in the 900 block of 31st Street after watching the vehicle roll past the stop line at Q Avenue. The driver, a 58-year-old Anacortes man, smelled strongly of intoxicants, had slurred speech, and repeatedly called the male officer “Ma’am.” An open bottle of alcohol was seen inside of the car and the man admitted to drinking a beer he had just bought while driving. The man displayed poor balance and performed poorly on field sobriety tests. The man was arrested for drunk driving and provided two breath samples that were over three times the legal limit. He was cited for DUI and released to his wife.
Officers responded to a fight in progress in the 900 block of 4th Street. They contacted a 34-year-old Anacortes man standing outside of an apartment building who had a cut eye, swollen nose, and a false tooth knocked out. The man was upset and yelling at an 18-year-old Anacortes man inside of the apartment building to come outside and fight. Officers learned that the younger man had given the older man $20 to buy marijuana and then confronted the older man when he returned without the drug. The younger man said that the older man struck him in the face with a thrown cell phone which resulted in him punching the older man in the face. The fight continued with both men throwing punches and the younger man punching the older man in the face again before a neighbor broke them apart. The older man said that he would get a medical examination later and possible charges are pending.
Officers contacted a married couple at their house in the 1600 block of 9th Street after it was reported they were involved in a verbal domestic dispute. Both persons had been drinking and it was learned that they had argued over financial matters. It was determined that no crime had occurred and the man voluntarily left for the night.
