A blue 2019 Mazda CX-3 SUV with Washington plates BKM4935 was stolen from Doon Way in Skyline sometime between 8PM on Christmas Day and 6AM the following day, per a stolen vehicle report given to APD. At the time of the theft, the vehicle had a Yakima bike rack on the top and a dent on the roof. The victim told the investigating officer that he left the car unlocked overnight and the keys may have been left it the vehicle. There was another unlocked car in the driveway and there were valuables missing from that vehicle as well. Anyone with information on the stolen car can call an APD Officer via emergency dispatch at (360) 428-3211; reference APD case number 20-A08218.

Just after 4AM on December 26, an APD Corporal was on patrol at Marine Heights Way and Anaco Beach Road and he noticed a van pass by him that was exceeding the speed limit by almost 20 miles per hour. The Corporal pulled the van over to speak with the 37-year-old Anacortes driver who was later determined to have a suspended driver’s license. The man was arrested, cited, and released on scene for driving while license suspended.

Just after 10AM on the 26th, APD Officers took a local 28-year-old into custody who had two arrest warrants for driving while license suspended and assault, respectively. Officers contacted the man to ask if he needed help after noticing that he was running around the 2900 block of Q Avenue and appeared to be looking for something or someone. After confirming that he did not need any help, the officer left the area and ran a routine query using his name. When the query returned with two arrest warrants, officers re-contacted the man nearby and took him into custody without incident. He was later booked in jail on his warrants.

An APD Officer on patrol on R Avenue was made aware via a 911 dispatcher that there was a bright colored sedan coming into town that was reportedly driving erratically. The officer noticed a car matching the description provided by the caller and followed it to the 1000 block of 22nd street. While following the car, the officer noticed that it veered sharply to the left and right, nearly struck a parked car, and pulled out in front of an oncoming motorist on 22nd Street, so the officer pulled the car over to speak with the driver, later identified as a 36-year-old La Conner man. The car smelled of marijuana and the driver slowly labored to gather his driver’s license and proof of insurance. The driver later agreed to take roadside sobriety tests, but had a difficult time following simple instructions. He was taken into custody for DUI and later booked in jail since he had a DUI conviction in recent years.

An APD Officer on patrol on State Route 20 early morning on the 28th ran the plates of an older model Honda driving in front of him and determined that the plates were expired as of late October, so he pulled the car over. The driver, a 31-year-old man from Sedro-Woolley, said he was unaware that the plates were expired because the car belonged to a friend. The driver offered that his driving status may be suspended and a routine driver check revealed that he was correct. A ferry terminal employee contacted police on the afternoon of the 30th to report that a driver in line to board the ferry was possibly under the influence. An officer arrived to investigate the matter and speak with the 59-year-old Bothell driver. There was an odor of alcohol coming from the car and though the driver was cooperative, he had a difficult time responding to questions and swayed from side to side during the roadside sobriety tests. The officer placed the man under arrest as a result of his observations. The driver was later given a breath test at the police station that yielded a reading well over the legal limit to operate a car. He was later booked in jail on a physical control of a vehicle while under the influence charge.

APD Officers took a motor vehicle accident report at 4:30 AM on New Year’s Day. A passerby on R Avenue observed that an older model pickup struck a utility pole and the pole fell on top of the truck. The first officer on scene spoke with the 19-year-old man driving the pickup and determined that he was not injured in the crash, despite the seriousness of the collision including heavy damage to the front end of the vehicle and deployed airbags. When speaking with the officer, the driver spoke with slurred speech. The driver agreed to take roadside sobriety tests, but performed poorly and was swaying as he spoke with the investigating officer. The driver later provided a breath sample of well over the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle. He was taken into custody and cited for driving under the influence. He was later released to a sober family member.
