Police Blotter, August 26 - 30, 2018

Police arrested and sent to county jail a local man for drunk driving after a short chase in which the driver struck another car causing $2,000 damage.

APD Officers arrested a 27-year-old Anacortes man for suspicion of driving under the influence on Thursday night. An officer was dispatched to a drive-thru restaurant just before 10PM after an employee called 911 to report a drive-thru customer she thought might be under the influence. Before the officer arrived, the suspect driver’s sedan rear-ended a customer in front of him causing minor damage to her vehicle. Shortly thereafter, an APD Officer got out of her vehicle and attempted to make contact with the suspect driver, but he drove away from her. An additional officer, still in his patrol car, initiated his lights and sirens and pulled the erratically driven sedan over approximately two blocks away in the 1200 block of Q Avenue. During the short drive, the suspect vehicle struck another vehicle, causing $2,000 worth of damage. The suspect driver got out of the car and began walking towards officers despite several commands not to do so. After a few moments, the driver complied with officer commands and turned away from them before he was detained in handcuffs. Officers could smell alcohol on the driver’s breath and noticed several signs of intoxication, including his watery, bloodshot eyes. He was taken into custody and transported to APD to be processed for DUI where he provided breath samples of approximately twice the legal limit to safely and legally operate a motor vehicle. He was later transported to jail where he was booked on an investigative hold for DUI, eluding, and hit and run charges.

Here are some other cases Anacortes Police reported this week.

Just after 4AM on Sunday, an APD Officer on patrol observed an SUV parked in a business lot at 32nd and Commercial Avenue. After running the plates, the officer determined that the car was registered to a woman with an outstanding warrant for her arrest and recognized the woman standing next to the car as the wanted person. The officer contacted the 29-year-old Eastsound woman and took her into custody without incident. She was later booked and released on her warrant. An officer also spoke with the man sitting in the passenger’s seat of the vehicle. The 29-year-old man stepped out of the car and stated that he knew he had outstanding warrants for his arrest. The officer confirmed the man’s three warrants and took him into custody. He was later transported to the county jail where he was booked on his warrants.

An intoxicated 43-year-old man was arrested early Sunday afternoon after a local grocery store representative called police to report that he stole alcohol and $8 worth of food from the store. The store manager followed the suspect out of the store and collected the stolen items. The suspect then had a seat outside the store and waited for police to arrive. After his arrest, the man was released with a copy of his theft citation and a notice banning him from the store.

A 63-year-old Anacortes man was given a Following Too Close ticket on Sunday afternoon after he rear ended an SUV with his pickup at 12th Street and D Avenue. The collision caused the SUV to strike the rear of another vehicle as well. There were no injuries.

A local woman called police on Sunday evening to report that someone claiming to be an FBI Agent called her saying that she was going to be arrested. The woman recognized that it was likely a scam and did not provide any information or money to the scammer.

A man and woman did their best to avoid recognition by an APD Sergeant on patrol at eight o’clock on Monday morning. The Sergeant was driving through a park and ride lot on South Marchs Point Road when the 29-year-old male, later determined to have a felony warrant and an Anacortes Municipal Court warrant, was taken into custody on his warrant. The woman, a 23-year-old known to police, was also arrested on a warrant for hit and run. Both were booked in the Skagit County Jail on their warrants.

A local man contacted a police officer on Monday morning to inquire about the validity of a surprise $7,800 check payable to him sent by a popular mail sweepstakes company. The check and associated letter looked somewhat legitimate, though the letter suggested that the recipient keep the news to himself, which is a common practice by scammers attempting to isolate and manipulate their victims. On Wednesday, the check recipient reported that his bank recommended that he deposit the check and patiently wait the one-week period to determine if the check is legitimate. Fingers crossed!

An APD Officer was on his way to 17th and Commercial Avenue per the report of someone tampering with a fire hydrant in the area. Prior to the officer’s arrival he was informed that the person was just opening a can of tuna.

An APD Officer responded to a local auto shop on Monday afternoon to collect information from the victim of a sugar-in-the-gas tank prank. The victim was driving along SR 20 when his car inexplicably stopped running and was towed to town. A professional tank cleaning and fuel pump replacement will cost the victim $650.

A 74-year-old Anacortes man was arrested and booked in the county jail on Monday evening on an assault charge. Investigation on scene revealed that the man and his wife got into a verbal argument that evening because she had the volume on the bedroom television too loud so he moved the mattress to the living room where is was quieter. The two continued their argument in the living room by the mattress and the suspect grabbed his wife by the shirt and pushed her onto the mattress. She then called 911 for help.

An Anacortes Police Officer was on patrol on South March’s Point Road on Thursday afternoon when he observed an older model Ford SUV with no front license plate, no driver’s side mirror, and an expired vehicle registration so he pulled the car over. The 42-year-old man driving the vehicle said the vehicle did not belong to him and he did not own anything in it. A routine check of the driver’s record revealed that he had a suspended license and two misdemeanor warrants out of the Burlington Municipal Court. The man was arrested on the driving charge and two warrants. A search of the suspect incident to arrest yielded a small baggie containing suspected methamphetamine. Anacortes Police K9 T-Bone was deployed on the exterior of the car and displayed mannerisms consistent with the presence of illegal narcotics in the SUV. The car was impounded and later searched for illegal narcotics. The man was taken to APD, booked on his warrants, and released. The driver faces possible drug possession charges based on the results of the search of his person and vehicle he was driving at the time of arrest.

APD Officers were dispatched to an abandoned building in the 1900 block of 7th Street on Thursday just after 11PM. A man called 911 dispatch to report that he could see the glow of flashlights in the building and thought it was suspicious. Officers arrived and walked past a locked gate and several no trespassing signs posted on the property. After a short time, a woman stepped out of the building and went to speak with the officer when asked to do so. The woman told the officer that she used to work in the building and wanted to walk through it because she was curious about what it looked like inside but admitted that she did not have permission to be there and was aware of the no trespassing signs. She said there with a man there with her and he later emerged as well. The man and woman were arrested and charged with trespassing. They were later released from the scene.

Note: Anacortes Police Department policy is to not include names or addresses of businesses or individuals that call 911 for police assistance, though this information is a matter of public record.
