Low Tide at Seafarers Park

I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw how the tide had taken all the water out of the little basin at Seafarers Park during Tuesday's low tide. Historic low tides continued for the next couple of days.

On Tuesday, the tide was about 3 feet 9 inches below normal.

Puget Sound saw it's lowest tides in more than a decadeon Wednesday and Thursday after I took this photo. Low tides aren't unusual eveery summer, but this year some kind of wobble in the moon's orbit is being credited to the usually low tides.

Oceanographer Ian Miller told public radio KUOW, "We are approaching a peak of the lunar nodal cycle, in which the difference between the high and low tides will be larger than it is at other times."
