Cowboy Poet and Songster, Dick Warwick on Guemes Island

Sat. Nov 3, 2018 7:00 pm

Dick Warwick is a man of diverse talents. He’s a fiddler in the Urban Coyote Bush Band and an artisan who crafts silverware into sculptures. He’s a cowboy who still bucks hay bales and a songster who’ll sing you a tune. He’s a poet whose writings reflect the life he’s lived in the rural west. And, he’s a man whose poetry has taken him around the world.

Saturday, November 3rd, Warwick will be performing on Guemes Island. This sought-after bard has performed throughout the US and Australia for over 20 years. His honors include winning the Cowboy Idol poetry competition at the Columbia River Cowboy Festival, being all-around champion at the Cowboy Poetry Rodeo in Utah and featured poet multiple times at Nevada’s and Colorado’s Cowboy Poetry Gatherings and Australia’s National Folk Festival. He also bears the distinction of being selected as a cultural ambassador by the US Consul in Western Australia.

Warwick authored the book “Out West to Outback and Beyond” and his poems have been published many times in the Australian Anthology “The Swagman’s Book of Verse.”

As for recordings, he’s got nine under his belt! His latest two, "Cowboy Poetry Lite" and "Cowboy Poetry Plus," were both Western Music Association finalists for cowboy poetry CD of the year.

This event is being presented by The 4 Chicks – the four-woman team of Cheryl Mansley, Suzie Gwost, Lorrie Steele and Libby Hinds Boucher. The 4 Chicks believe in creating community events with a “down-home” feel.

So, on Saturday, November 3rd, round up your posse, put on your boots and mosey on over to the Guemes Island Community Center at 7549 Guemes Island Road for some cowboy music and poetry. Show starts at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $15/person suggested donation @ the door. Cowhand-style refreshments will be served during intermission. Feel free to come in cowboy and cowgirl attire!

Brewgrass Saturday night

Sat. Nov 3, 2018 8:00 pm

Brewgrass! 2018 features a mix of traditional and contemporary bluegrass bands. This year’s lineup includes four acts over two evenings at two establishments: the Rockfish Grill and the Brown Lantern Ale House. Admission is free to the both!
Here’s a peek at this year’s line-up:

Saturday 11/3
Rockfish Grill – High Mountain String Band 8PM
Brown Lantern – Pickled Okra 9:30PM

High Mountain String Band The High Mountain String Band is a Bellingham based Band that has been playing together for 6 years. They play Traditional and Progressive Bluegrass with some Old Time Tunes and Country Songs mixed in. With Kurt Gisclaire on Lead Vocals and Mandolin, Ian McLelland-Banjo, Andy Bunn Vocals and Guitar, Bryan Thurber-Fiddle, John Daughtrey Vocals and Bass, You’re sure to enjoy some Toe Tapping Bluegrass Music.

Pickled Okra is an entirely different category of Bluegrass band. They are a true cross-over, appealing to casual AND true bluegrass fans. Though their definitive sound spans a wide slice of Americana, it could also be described as “old-school, porch-settin’, singin’ into a can-style bluegrass”. Devout practitioners of single mic performance, they never quite fit completely into a ‘generic’ bluegrass groove, they tend to skirt the edges of many different genres, infusing their sound with twinges of funk, reggae, pop and gypsy jazz and regularly offer up “pickled” versions of pop/rock tunes by the likes of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley, to name a few.

Building the Viking Ship, Polaris

Sat. Nov 17, 2018 4:00 pm

Creating the 36’ replica of a Viking ship originally built on Norway’s west coast in 1030 AD took daring, patience, remarkable collaborations, and a good dose of skill. Fidalgo Island boat builder, Jay Smith will share a tale of traditional shipbuilding that includes sawyers, blacksmith, sculptor, sailmaker, visionary owner, and the camaraderie that kept the project moving forward until a festive launch in November 2017. Over the last 35 years, Jay Smith has researched and built Nordic lapstrake boats, beginning in a small boat shop on a fjord in western Norway. A seven-month apprenticeship in the Faroe Islands, sponsored by the Danmark-America Foundation, established a firm footing for future work and study. Since then he has made a living building and repairing boats, specializing in lapstrake construction. Periodic travel and research in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark has strengthened Jay’s understanding of Scandinavian culture, history, and boatbuilding. Over the years he has shared these unique traditions with enthusiastic young boat builders and wooden boat enthusiasts through hands-on workshops, lectures and classes. He now works from his shop near Anacortes, on Fidalgo Island. Saturday, November 17, 4:00 pm at the library.

The Future of Fidalgo's Forests

Tue. Nov 27, 2018 6:30 pm

Our TF&F Monthly Gathering Presentation:

 November 27, 6:30 pm
The Future of Fidalgo Forests
Jack Hartt, Former Park Manager, Deception Pass State Park
Denise Crow, Former Director of the Friends of the Forest
Jonn Lunsford, current Operations and Forest Lands Manager for the ACFL

Our Fidalgo forests are changing. Some of these changes are natural, such as forest succession, leading to old growth forests if left undisturbed. Some of the changes are sudden, such as being burned by the fires we have experienced the past few years. And some are subtle, with drier summers and wetter and warmer winters causing changes to the water table and soil. And some are intentional, when we cut swaths to create new housing developments, parking lots, roadways, and other ‘improvements’.

Former Deception Pass State Park manager Jack Hartt will join with Denise Crowe, former director of the Friends of the Forest, and Jonn Lunsford, current Operations and Forest Lands Manager for the ACFL, to present a program entitled “The Future of Fidalgo’s Forests, and what you can do to make a difference”

This illustrated discussion will look at the forests in the Anacortes Community Forest Lands and Deception Pass State Park as examples of much broader themes around our entire planet. What changes do we see? What do we want to see? What can we do to see the future we want?

If you are interested in the upcoming ACFL Forest Monitoring project, then this program will help you see the why’s and wherefore’s of how to help with some essential baseline studies.

Our monthly meetings include a sharing time and programs to help build local resilience and reduce carbon dependency. For more information, visit transitionfidalgo.org.
