Free memory screenings will be held on Tuesday, May 1 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Health Resource Center at Island Hospital, 1211 24thSt., Anacortes. This series of questions and tasks designed to test memory, language and other intellectual functions can help determine if you might be suffering from memory loss. Sugarloaf Wildflowers Hike for all ages: Join the Friends of the Forest on  Saturday, May 5th
from 10am until noon.  This is the ultimate wildflower hike of the year. We will savor the climb through alternating forest and rocky bald meadow, learning each flower as we go. From blue camas lily to red Indian paintbrush, come and see the bounty of color this little mountain has to offer. The views from the summit are not to be missed. Meet at the Southern trailhead halfway up the Mount Erie view road. The trip up and back is one mile, and quite steep and rocky in places. Little Cranberry Lake Loop Hike for all ages

Little Cranberry Lake Loop Hike for all ages: Join the Friends of the Forest on Saturday, May 12th
from 10am until after noon. The August 2016 18-acre fire on the east side of Little Cranberry Lake dramatically altered a large area of forest terrain. As we hike all of the way around on shore trail, we will take note of the regrowth in the fire zone and see how this lake basin provides diverse habitat for hundreds of native plants and animals. Will we see river otter? Raven? Red-legged frog?  Wildflowers guaranteed. Meet at the Little Cranberry Lake parking lot on the North end of the lake. (Take Georgia south off of Oakes Ave.- 3 blocks up take a right on Little Cranberry road and follow gravel to parking lot.) These hikes are free!  For more info. Go to www.friendsoftheacfl.org.

Join Harry von Stark, a professional photographer and documentarian, as he shares the pictorial story of America’s Finest, a 21st-century, 80 million dollar, high tech fishing trawler built in Anacortes, Washington. Harry documented the build from day one to launch as the vessel was constructed by the skilled labor, sweat, and pride of local craftspeople. America’s Finest now lays in limbo at Dakota Creek Industries where she was constructed and awaits her fate to be decided by the US Congress. Wednesday, May 16, 7:00 pm at the library.

“Science on the Bay: Fidalgo Bay”

The Fidalgo Bay Aquatic Reserve Citizen Stewardship Committee is hosting its first-ever forum to show people in Skagit County the important science happening right in their backyard – Fidalgo Bay!   Talks and displays will focus on local science topics like monitoring pollutants using mussels, wintering seabirds, Great Blue Herons, ocean acidification, the impacts of invasive green crab, and more. “Science on the “Bay” is free, and lunch is provided to attendees by Pizza Factory. Join Laura Lavigne as she shares her beautiful, heartbreaking, and life-changing experiences working with refugees in Lesvos, Greece. Laura was born in France and is a long-time resident of Anacortes. She is a happiness coach, TEDx speaker, author, and the director of the Anacortes Center for Happiness. As she traveled through Europe for six months with a backpack and very little planning, a strong pull called her to Greece, where her family came as refugees over 600 years ago. It was not long before she found herself working with refugees on Lesvos Island, both learning and un-learning a lot. Wednesday, May 23, 7:00 pm at the library.
