History of Jazz Piano

Come to Anacortes Public Library at 7 pm on Friday March 2 for the first of two free talks which together cover the development of jazz piano style and technique through history, highlighting the most important contributors, and illustrated with audio and video recordings.  The speaker will be Brent Jensen, a popular local saxophonist and bandleader (and Paul Desmond devotee), who was also for 18 years the Director of Jazz Studies at the College of Southern Idaho, where he developed a comprehensive jazz handbook for teaching college jazz history courses.  The second in the series will be held on March 30.  History of Jazz Piano (Two Part Series).  Friday, March 2, 7:00 pm and Friday, March 30, 7:00 pm at the library.

Colon Cancer Screening

Anacortes Family Medicine is offering a colon cancer screening that can detect hidden blood which can be a symptom of growths within the colon. Pick-up a stool sample kit on Tuesday, Mar. 6, between 9 and 11 a.m. at Anacortes Family Medicine, 2511 M Ave. Suite B, Anacortes. You must be present to pick-up a kit.  

If you have insurance (other than Medicare or Medicaid), please bring your insurance card. If your insurance doesn’t cover the cost of the screening, your cost will be $10. Call 360-299-1309 for questions.

Travel by Foot: Camino Frances

Professor John C. Howell will give an account of his 45- day journey across Spain on the Camino Frances. His journey afoot followed the classical route taken by tens of thousands of pilgrims each year. Starting on April 22, 2017, he traveled from St Jean Pied de Port on the French side of the Pyrenees and ended at the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. Second Sunday Jazz

Nuages, a Gypsy jazz quartet from Bellingham, performs a free, live jazz concert at the library. Specializing in blending the music of Django Reinhardt with modern jazz and musical concepts, Nuages is Bellingham’s local modern Gypsy jazz quartet. Michael Paul leads the ensemble on Soprano Saxophone along with Zach Zenovic and Dan Fair on guitars, Nick Sokol on Mandolin and Sarah Yates on bass. Privacy in the Digital Age

Join Alex Alben, State Chief Privacy Officer, to learn about laws that protect privacy, the dangers of technology, and tips for preserving your personal data. Alex Alben is Washington State’s first Chief Privacy Officer, an office created by the state legislature in March 2015. He coordinates privacy and data policy for the state and consults with the Governor and Legislature on technology issues impacting citizen privacy. As one of only five Chief Privacy Officers in the country, Alex has initiated statewide programs for enhanced privacy training, consumer education and “Privacy Modeling.” In March 2017, Gov Tech Magazine named him one of the country’s top “Doers, Dreamers and Drivers” in state government. Wednesday, March 14, 6:30 pm at the library.

The Salish Sea: Where it is - How  it works - Who uses it - What it means

How do you go about naming three interconnected bodies of water that encompass 7,000 square miles and span an international border.  Marine biologist, Dr. Bert Webber, Prof. Emeritus Environmental Science, WWU, Huxley College; Founding Fellow WWU Salish Sea Inst., answers that question! The unique estuary ecosystem made up of Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the Strait of Georgia needed a distinct name that could unify efforts to protect and restore these bodies of water and reflect the region’s indigenous history. This series of questions and tasks designed to test memory, language and other intellectual functions can help determine if you might be suffering from memory loss. Step into the controversial world of greyhound racing with award-winning author Kathleen Kaska. She will discuss her latest mystery, Run Dog Run—the first in her new animal rights mystery series. A long-time rehabber of injured and orphaned wildlife, Kaska began writing the series to bring about awareness of animal rights.
