The Library is hosting a series of 3 monthly Silent Book Club meet-ups, which has no assigned reading. Started in San Francisco, the Silent Book Club is now an international community of bookworms who meet to carve out more time for just reading. If there is enough interest after the first 3 meetings, the Silent Book Club will continue through the summer and into the fall.

They also provide you with a first-hand perspective on the ease and adventure of “license free” piloting of your own chartered canal boat for a truly wonderful self-guided vacation.

Friends of the Forest Hike

Sugarloaf Wildflowers Hike for all ages

Join the Friends of the Forest on Saturday, May 6th from 10am until noon . This is the ultimate wildflower hike of the year. We will savor the climb through alternating forest and rocky bald meadow, learning each flower as we go. From blue camus lily to red Indian paintbrush, come and see the bounty of color this little mountain has to offer. The views from the summit are not to be missed. Meet at the Southern trailhead halfway up the Mount Erie view road. The trip up and back is one mile, and quite steep and scrambly in places.

This is a beautiful route that culminates in a lovely wildflower meadow, sure to be in bloom. Meet at the end of 29th St. west off of D Avenue

Musician and entertainer Paul “Buck” Stierle returns with this popular performance of Bob Dylan’s early years, 1962-1974. Buck focuses on Dylan’s early hits, such as “Blowing in the Wind,” “Don’t Think Twice,” “The Times They Are a’ Changing,” and many more, including “Like a Rolling Stone,” voted #1 in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest songs of the 20th century. The performance traces Dylan’s progress through folk music, protest song, folk rock, and rock-n-roll to country rock and Christian music.

A Brief Cultural History of the Saxophone

From Marching Bands to Modern Jazz: A Brief Cultural History of the Saxophone
After its invention in 1846, the saxophone had an interesting and unlikely trip to its current place as a cultural icon in popular music. Learn about its inventor, Adolphe Sax, the artists who gave it a voice, and the music it helped make famous. The evening will include a display of vintage and modern instruments, a historical lecture, and chance to hear some of the famous players in action. The presenter, local musician John Anderson, has performed throughout the Pacific Northwest and has been featured on recordings by Trish Hatley and other Northwest artists. The presentation is sponsored by the Anacortes Library Foundation Manieri Endowment.

Westside Exploration Hike for all ages

Join the Friends of the Forest on Saturday, May 20th from 10am until noon. Take a two-mile walk on the wild Westside! Calling all Skyline folk and anyone else that wants to know more about this great part of the woods. We will climb the watertower road and enter the forest from the west, exploring a network of Beaver Ponds that flow into Little Cranberry Lake. Meet at the intersection of Clyde Way and Cedar Glen Way.

Veterans Memorial Plaza open for Memorial Day

We invite the community to visit Veterans Memorial Plaza at Seahawk Stadium this Memorial Day, and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

The plaza will be open to the public from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, May 29. No events are planned; rather we invite the community in for reflection and remembrance. The plaza is comprised of a memorial designed by local architect Brooks Middleton, with input from the Veterans Memorial Committee, as well as a display honoring two Medal of Honor recipients with local connections.

Volunteering to Improve Small-Holder Agriculture Worldwide

WSU Horticulture Professor Carol Miles discusses her trip to Mozambique where farmers face scarce water and temperatures in the 100s. Under the auspices of the U.S. Agency for International Development, she spent 2 weeks in the village of Buzi training farmers on pest management, rotating crops, and other areas to improve their crops and their lives.
