Tuesday, April 28, 2020 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
With Maribeth Crandell and Jack Hartt, Transition Fidalgo
Join us for a Zoom presentation on Hiking Very Close to Home, in an age of Stay Home, Stay Safe, Stay Sane.Maribeth and Jack wrote a book called Hiking Close to Home last year, featuring trails on Whidbey, Fidalgo, and Guemes islands. With the Stay at Home order, we still need to get outdoors when and where we can do so safely.Their presentation will focus only on trails that are within walking or bike-riding distance of where we live. They will discuss the most up to date details about trail closures and restrictions, and provide recommendations for hiking safely under the various circumstances we all now encounter.
Should I go hiking? Can it be safe? What trails are still open? Why go outside?
Share your thoughts, comments, and questions by email throughout the meeting so we can answer questions as they arise. The address of the Zoom meeting will be shared a few days ahead of time, so visit the Transition Fidalgo Web site for specific login information.
Call in or join by computer. The presentation will start at 6:45 with music and welcoming messages, and the presentation starts at 7. Hopefully. This is all a new world of how to meet together without meeting together.
Our new "Fidalgo Grows" blog is blooming with info to help you enjoy the benefits of growing your own food and increasing your resilience in challenging times.Local gardening guru Peter Heffelfinger will let you know what to focus on each week of the growing season, and we'll post regular input from other experts who'll take on special gardening topics. Farmers Market
Saturday, May 2, 2020 9:00 am - 10:00 am
Anacortes Farmers Market ... Our popular "online" farmers market is back again! As we start to work toward our goal of re-opening "in-person" sometime soon, we also plan to have a few vendors/food trucks on site.
By ordering your products from farmers market vendors remotely then "picking up" your pre-packed order at the Depot, we can all do our part to support local businesses, enjoy tasty food options, and keep our community healthy and safe.
Step 1: Click HERE to shop our secure online storefront between now and April 29th at 10pm and support your farmers market vendors!
Link: https://anacortes-farmers-market.myshopify.com/collections/all
Step 2: Pre-pay for your order with your debit/credit card, Paypal, or any of the other methods accepted on our online store You will receive an automated order conformation with an order number.
EBT USERS: click "cash on delivery" and bring your EBT card to the Depot when you pick up your order to complete your transaction. All other transactions MUST be pre-paid.
Step 3: Head down to the Depot (corner of 7th St & R Ave) to pick up your order on Saturday, May 2. On the day before (May 1) AFM will assign you a "target pickup window". Please do your best to pick up your order during this window to help us stagger crowds. However, if you are unable come during your target window, that's OK - as long as you come to depot between 9am and 2pm we will be able to help you. Be sure to remember your order number - we will not be able to find your products without it.PRE-PAID ORDERS THAT ARE NOT PICKED UP BY 2PM WILL BE RETURNED TO THE VENDOR OR DONATED.
Can't leave your home? Have a friend or family member pick up your order or e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to see if we can accommodate a porch delivery. (Delivery is not available for EBT orders and is limited to locations on Fidalgo Island only)
Information about Vendors Onsite
Only vendors classified as "essential" within the meaning of the Governor's Stay at Home Order are allowed. These include vendors in the following categories: Food and Drink, Nursery and Horticulture, and Soap. Food and drink purchased from these vendors will be packaged "to-go" and should not be consumed onsite.
All onsite vendors accept cash and some accept credit/debit cards. If you have tokens at home, you may bring them to spend, but AFM will not be selling new tokens (except EBT tokens) on May 2. We plan to resume our token service for debit and credit cards ASAP, but our highest priority is maintaining a clean and safe site for vendors, customers, and market staff.
HEALTH AND SAFETY REMINDERS
The current Governor's order does not expire until May 4, so it will be in effect during this weekend's market.
Follow the market's health and safety plan by minding the following requirements:
1. Stay 6 feet away from others to the extent possible at all times.
2. Wash your hands before you visit, when you get home, and frequently while you are here. A handwash station with warm water, soap, and single use paper towels will be available to the public.
3. Do not linger; shoppers should get in and out with minimal social contact.
4. Do not touch products on display. Tell the vendor what you want and they will pick it up for you.
5. Avoid eating or drinking onsite. AFM will not have cafe tables or seating available.
6. Wear a secure mask if you have one.

Online: Anacortes Mill History and Shoreline Cleanup
Tuesday, May 12, 2020 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Part 2: Anacortes Mill History and Shoreline Cleanup by Betty Carteret
Wood mills were an important foundation of the early growth of the Anacortes economy starting in the 1870s and continuing for a century. The mills helped Anacortes become what it is today but left behind an unintended legacy of environmental damage to the shoreline of Fidalgo Bay. That’s not the end of the story though. The Anacortes Baywide Cleanup that started around 2007 has cleaned up and restored habitat at a number of these mill sites reestablishing wildlife habitat and recreation areas for the community. Betty Carteret, will share the “Trail Tales” story of these events.

Living Light in the Pacific Northwest with Chandler Colahan
Tuesday, June 16, 2020 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Have you been fortunate enough to witness a sparkling blue light in Salish Sea waters? Perhaps a trail of glitter behind your boat? A mini explosion of light as you toss a stone into the bay? Bioluminescent plankton are microscopic organisms that give off light when disturbed. Scientists are now finding all kinds of marine life with the same talent – sparkling and glowing in their underwater world. Padilla Bay educator, Chandler Colahan, will share her love and knowledge of these glow-in-the-dark neighbors.
Chandler Colahan is the education specialist at Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Bayview, WA. She has been an environmental and marine educator for more than twenty years. Chandler has a BA degree in Ocean Science, Education, and Creative Expression from Western Washington University, Fairhaven College. She also spent many years researching plankton and jellyfish at Shannon Point Marine Center. When she is not exploring the mudflats with students, you can often find Chandler exploring the waters of the Salish Sea looking for wildlife.

Friends of the Forest Webinar: Antarctic Gold
Tuesday, October 20, 2020 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Searching for Treasure in an Invisible Forest -
The "Invisible Forest" of the sea, otherwise known as plankton, is responsible for producing a whopping 50% of the Earth's oxygen. Allison Cusick has dedicated her life to studying plankton in Antarctica and has utilized citizen science as a means to reach a better understanding of this invisible world. She'll take us on a journey from her childhood home of Seattle all the way to her current (that's an ocean pun) role studying the effect of melting glaciers on the invisible forest in the Antarctic ocean. Along the way we'll hear about her time monitoring the Salish Sea, studying big cats and wild dogs in Africa, and everything in between!
Allison Cusick - PhD Student and Researcher @Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Allison Cusick was born and raised in Seattle, Washington where she graduated with a B.S. in Biology from the University of Washington in 2006. She then worked for 10 years in various disciplines including oceanography, neurobiology, immunology, biofuel genetics, and field ecology studying birds and squirrels in Washington, big cats and wild dogs in Africa, and parrots and macaws in Mexico and the Peruvian Amazon. In 2013, she was sent on a research icebreaker for a 53- day expedition in Antarctica’s Ross Sea. This experience inspired her to pursue a career in Biological Oceanography, focusing on microscopic life-the invisible forest hiding in the ocean. In 2016, she started at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and designed the citizen science project FjordPhyto which engages tour ships in polar science while they visit the Antarctic Peninsula. She uses this data for her PhD dissertation, trying to understand how melting glaciers impact the microscopic phytoplankton communities.
