Big Picture: Trestle celebration

Celebrants pose for a group picture following the Trestle re-opening celebration on Thurs., June 17, at the Fidalgo Bay RV Park. About 300 feet of the trestle was damaged by a fire on Oct. 13, 2009. The community raised more than $300,000 and volunteered many hours to rebuilt it.

Big Picture: Work set to start on new Depot plaza


Construction is slated to start "any day now" on a new paved area just north of the Depot Arts Center that will, eventually, become an expanded plaza surrounding the Depot.

Big Picture: Scholarships go to AHS students


More than three-dozen students received scholarships during a ceremony by the Anacortes Schools Foundation on Wednesday night. More than $60,000 in scholarships was handed out to local kids.

Big Picture: Robotics show for School Board


The Anacortes High School FIRST Robotics team shows how their robot can 'kick' a soccer ball during a demonstration Thursday for the School Board. Student School Board member Dustin Calvert led an explanation on how the robot works.

Fidalgo Island Packing Company and Alaska Packing Company, pictured here, built canneries in 1894 and 1895, respectively, at Ship Harbor, now the site of the Washington State Ferries terminal.

Big Picture: Historic ships make stop here


An OARS rowing crew practices Tuesday morning with two historic ships, Lady Washington (left) and Hawaiian Chieftain in the background, at Cap Sante Marina. The tall ships were open Monday for brief tours. Both have already sailed off for Bellingham, But, they'll be back in July.

The Great Northern Depot was built in 1911 at 7th & R and served as a depot until 1973. This photo of the north side shows a steam engine, people on the platform, horse & buggy 'hacks' for hire.

Big Picture: Trestle repairs

Repairs to the Tommy Thompson trestle across Fidalgo Bay are nearing the final phase. City Parks Director Gary Robinson told the City Council Monday night that he hopes that repair work will be done by mid-May.


Big Picture: Columbian School


This photo, circa 1920s, shows the Columbian School after removal of the belltower campanile. When new, the tall belltower provided the best view in town. This building was just north of what is now the high school.
