The Police Blotter, Mar. 14, 2009

Five vehicle collisions were reported on Monday, March 9th, between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm on highway 20 between Thompson Rd. and Fidalgo Rd. Officers said that the sudden heavy snow fall in the area made visibility poor and the roads slick. No one was injured in any of the collisions.

Friday, Mar. 6

Murphy, the Jack Russell Terrier, was impounded by officers and taken to the pound.  Murphy was running lose in his neighborhood in the 3300 block of Field Ave.  His owners later claimed him at the pound.  Officers hope his term of incarceration will deter him from further marauding behavior. 

Saturday, Mar. 7

A citizen brought a stray mini Doberman Pintzer into the dog pound after they found it roaming the area of 12th and “O” Ave.  The dog had a wounded leg that required treatment. While being treated the dog bit a member of the veterinary staff.  ACO Padovan was able to locate the dog owner and advised them that the dog must now be quarantined because of the bite.  It is possible that charges could be filed against the dogs owner.  

Sunday, Mar. 8

A 22-year-old man was arrested for DUI and Assault 4th degree following an incident in the 2600 block of “R” Ave.  A 20-year-old woman told officers her older brother was intoxicated and had been arguing with her.  She said that as she was holding a three-year-old child in her arms her brother struck her in the head.  The man was contacted by officers as he was driving away from the residence.  He denied any assault but showed obvious signs of intoxication.  Physical evidence corroborated the woman’s version of events and the man was arrested and processed for DUI and taken to the jail for the Assault 4th degree DVPA charge. 

A 17-year-old Anacortes girl received a citation for hit-and-run driving after a vehicle she was driving briefly collided with another vehicle as they were both traveling westbound on SR 20 from Fidalgo Bay Rd.   Officers stopped the vehicle she was driving at 13th and “Q” Ave.  The driver said she wasn’t sure if she had hit the vehicle or not and that was why she did not stop.  A passenger in her car was arrested for outstanding warrants and giving a false name to officers.

Someone tried to enter a building in the 700 block of “R” Ave overnight.  The building owner discovered a drill bit broken off in the locking mechanism of a door and it appeared that entry had not been gained. 

A residence in the 4500 block of Oakes Ave was broken into while the resident was vacationing.  A person checking on the home discovered the house had been ransacked but was not able to determine if anything was missing.  Police are following up with the home owner.

Monday, Mar. 9

A 49-year-old man from Ephrata was cited and released after he was caught shoplifting from a grocery in the 900 block of 11th St. The man took $35.00 worth of food items.

Wednesday, Marh. 11

A 35-year-old Spokane man will face felony drug charges as well as DUI and Driving While Suspended following a traffic stop in the area of 30th and T Ave.  The man was driving erratically, failing to stop at stop signs, speeding, and jumping curbs when an officer pulled him over.  The officer saw a baggie of white powder on the vehicle floor board which was later identified as cocaine.  The man was arrested and processed for the DUI.  Two passengers in the vehicle were released without charges.  One had an outstanding warrant but the jail would not accept him because of over crowding.

Officers responded to the 1900 block of 13th St. after a 20-year-old Anacortes man called 911 to report his brother had struck him in the face several times.  Responding officers noticed large red knots on the man’s forehead consistent with being struck in the head.  The suspect had left prior to the officer’s arrival, but was stopped a short distance away in a vehicle.  The 23-year-old man was a passenger in the vehicle.  He also had trauma to his face as if he had been in a fight.  The man appeared intoxicated as did a 20-year-old female passenger.  The 17-year-old driver of the vehicle and the assault suspect both had marijuana in their possession and were cited for it.  The 20-year-old woman was also cited for Minor Consuming Alcohol.  The 23 year old was arrested for assault 4th DVPA and was booked into the Skagit County Jail. 

Thursday, Mar. 12

A resident in the 1300 block of 8th St. reported suspicious circumstances when she came home and found a window in her house broken and a suspicious truck parked out front.  Officers arrived and determined the truck belonged to a neighbor but have not been able to determine how the window broke.  No entry was gained into the house.

Friday, Mar. 13

A resident in the 100 lock of 36th St. returned home to discover that their home had been burglarized and an undisclosed amount of cash taken.  The thief used a later to gain access to the second story window.  Police are following up on leads and physical evidence found at the scene.
