2017 1104 vagabond

Vagabond Station was shut down this week after a car drifven by a teenager crashed into the front door.

A 16-year old male driving on older model Ford Explorer rammed into the southeast corner of a restaurant on the corner of Commercial Avenue and 22nd Street at 8:25 AM on Wednesday, Nov. 1. The driver told the investigating officer that he was on northbound Commercial Avenue in the turn lane and the turn light was green for some time before he realized it so he accelerated quickly to get through the intersection. The quick acceleration on the wet street caused the vehicle to lose traction and the driver over-corrected and slammed into the building. The driver was issued a driving too fast for conditions infraction and the officer left the scene with the car still lodged in the side of the building due to a compromise of its structural integrity. No one was seriously injured in the accident.

Here are some other cases Anacortes Police reported on this week.

Just before 1:30 on Saturday morning, an APD Officer on patrol on the SR 20 spur near Fidalgo Bay Road observed an older model minivan driving 67 mph in the posted 55 mph zone and he pulled the vehicle over. The 44-year old Anacortes driver explained that she was almost out of gas and wanted to get home quickly before the tank was empty. A routine check of the driver revealed that she had a DUI warrant and she was arrested and booked in the county jail on her warrant.

Just after 3AM on Saturday, an Anacortes Police Officer on patrol on the 1000 block of 22nd Street observed a man dressed in all black clothing run from behind a closed business upon seeing her marked patrol car. Backup units arrived and the 50-year old male suspect was taken into custody in the back yard of a residence nearby for one felony and four misdemeanor warrants. The suspect told police that he ran because he didn’t want to get arrested. He was booked in the county jail on his warrants.

Just before noon on Saturday, a local resident contacted police to report that his rear license plate was stolen from his vehicle. The victim was unsure when or where the theft had taken place. There are no suspects.

Early Saturday afternoon, an APD Officer on patrol on northbound Commercial Avenue observed a Ford minivan with expired registration tabs as of September 2017 and pulled it over. The 20-year old Anacortes driver stated that he had not driven the vehicle for several days and did not notice the expired tabs. He also stated that he purchased the van earlier in the year but had not transferred the title over to his name. He was cited for failure to transfer title on his vehicle and given an infraction for no proof of insurance and expired vehicle registration.

A 19-year old Anacortes woman was arrested at 5PM on Saturday afternoon on the 1700 block of 28th Street for violation of a no contact order and booked in the county jail on her charge. Police officers were dispatched to the residence earlier in the afternoon following a call to 911 dispatch with information that the woman was staying at the home in violation of a no contact order between the woman and her mother. She left the residence by the time officers arrived, but another call two hours later confirmed that she was back in the area and she was taken into custody without incident.

At 7:30 Saturday night, an APD Officer was dispatched to Devonshire Drive per the report of a no contact order violation. The responding officer contacted the 26-year old Blaine man who was a suspect in the incident. Investigation on scene revealed that a woman at the residence was the protected party in the no contact order and the suspect came to the home, attempted to gain entry into her car, and was confronted by the woman’s father. The suspect was booked in the county jail on charges of violation of a no contact order, assault, and attempted vehicle prowl.

Just after midnight on Sunday morning, APD Officers contacted a 42-year old Anacortes man who attempted to elude them on his bicycle. An officer observed the man in an alleyway between 10th and 11th Street and went to contact him on his bicycle because he did not have a headlight on it. The officer got out of his car to contact the subject and he rode off eastbound on 10th Street. Officers followed the man until he got to a dock on the 1000 block of Q Avenue. The man ignored commands to stop, instead advancing to the end of the dock and hiding on a boat behind some crab pots. He was detained and identified. A records check revealed that he had two misdemeanor warrants out of the Anacortes Municipal Court for obstructing a law enforcement officer and violating a no contact order. The man was searched incident to arrest and a plastic container was found in his pocket that contained a small amount of methamphetamine crystals. The suspect admitted to running from officers because he did not want to go to jail on his warrants.  He was booked in jail on his warrants and additional charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and obstructing a law enforcement officer.

Late Tuesday morning, a local resident went to the police department to file a mail fraud report. The man told police that he had received a bill for $38 from “Spectrum Billing Services” in Los Angeles. The man did not pay the bill or reply to the company. Further investigation revealed that other people have reported possible fraudulent activity stemming from the same company.

Early Tuesday afternoon, an APD Officer was dispatched to the eastbound lanes of SR 20 near Anacortes per the report of several crab pots that had fallen off the bed of a flatbed truck. DOT workers were picking up the pots at the time the officer arrived on scene, so he drove ahead and contacted the driver of the truck near Sharpes Corner. The 17-year old driver could not provide a valid driver’s license so he was cited for no valid operator’s license, failure to secure a load, and operating a motor vehicle without insurance because the truck was not insured.
