The Police Blotter, September 4, 2010

A man who had picked up a female hitchhiker on SR 20 near Thompson Road reported that the 21-year-old woman “freaked out” in his car.  The man dropped her off near Reservation Road and then called the police.

Police were familiar with the woman’s description and located her in the area and confirmed that she had a felony warrant for her arrest.  The woman was verbally abusive towards officers, but was placed under arrest.  She threatened to kill the officer who transported her to the jail and then cursed and threatened the jail staff during the booking process.

Saturday, August 28

A new 9.9 horsepower Mercury outboard boat motor valued at $2,200 was reported stolen from a dinghy that was on a larger boat moored at a marina in the 2400 block of T Avenue.  The boat owner had not yet had the opportunity to padlock the motor to the dingy. 

Sunday, August 29

A 14-year-old boy was booked into juvenile detention on charges of domestic violence assault after he allegedly shoved his 25-year-old sister during the course of an argument at a home in the 900 block of 23rd Street.  The sister was uninjured, but she had been holding her two-year-old child when she was knocked backwards. 

Cash, a digital camera, and a platinum and diamond wedding band valued at $2,500 were reported stolen from a home in the 400 block of Hillcrest Drive.  There was no sign of forced entry into the home and the victim suspected a family member who allegedly told the victim that he had pawned the ring.  The suspect was reported to be currently homeless and police are seeking to locate and contact the man.    

Monday, August 30

A vehicle parked in the street in the 4000 block of M Avenue had a windshield broken out and the stereo faceplate stolen from inside.  The thief was unsuccessful in removing the stereo but caused approximately $100 in damage to the dashboard.  Repair cost to the window was estimated at $250.  

Three cars parked at a home in the 3900 block of W. 5th Street.  A Sony car stereo valued at $40 and a Canon digital camera valued at $150 were stolen from one of the cars.  The other two vehicles were entered, but nothing appeared to be missing.  All three vehicles had been unlocked.

A witness saw a man reach through an open window of a car parked in the 1500 block of Commercial Avenue and then open the door.  The car alarm sounded and the man grabbed approximately $15 in cash from the center console and fled in an older charcoal gray colored Subaru station wagon with a partial California license of “5XL.”  The suspect was described as a white male in his 50’s wearing a blue baseball cap.  Police searched but were unable to locate the man or the vehicle. 

A 16-year-old Anacortes boy was cited for negligent driving and violating his intermediate driver’s license after he lost control of the car he was driving on Anaco Beach Road.  The boy and his 16-year-old passenger both estimated that the vehicle was traveling at around 60 mph in the 35 mph zone when the driver lost control of the car and it left the roadway and struck an embankment.  The officer measured approximately 130 feet of skid mark.  Fortunately, neither teen was injured although the car was extensively damaged on the driver’s side.   

Tuesday, August 31

A 21-year-old Anacortes man was arrested on an Island County District Court warrant for a previous drug charge after he was contacted on a sailboat that was moored at a dock in the 600 block of 30th Street.  Officers had checked on the boat as it had been tied to the dock for a few days which greatly exceeded the 4 hour limit.  The man was turned over to an Island County deputy for booking into jail.  

At least $600 worth of retail gift cards were reported stolen from an office in the 700 block of Commercial Avenue last week. Office employees told police that they were suspicious of a former employee whose employment had been terminated approximately a month earlier. The investigation is ongoing. 

Wednesday, September 1

A 39-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for drunk driving after an officer stopped the car he was driving for speeding on Oakes Avenue.  The officer smelled the odor of alcohol on the driver, but the driver said that he had “nothing” to drink.  The man then failed field sobriety tests including providing a portable breath test that showed he was approximately twice the legal limit.  The man then claimed he had “two” beers.  The man was placed under arrest and taken to the police station for processing.  He was cited for DUI and released.  

A homeowner in the 2300 block of 23rd Street reported someone had entered his house while he had been away and stole approximately $70 in loose change and a credit card.  When the victim called his bank to cancel the credit card, he learned that the unknown thief had already used the card at a gas station in Anacortes. 

A silver Univega mountain bike Valued at $100 was stolen from outside of a restaurant in the 2800 block of Commercial Avenue.  The victim said that she believed that an approximate 16-year-old boy with blonde hair who exited the restaurant just prior to her had stolen the bike.  Officers checked the area, but did not locate the boy of the bike.  

Officers responded to a home in the 9400 block of Padilla Heights Road regarding the report of 2 men fighting.  The two men, aged 29 and 32, had both been drinking and allegedly fighting because the older man wanted to take his 2-year-old child and drive to Montana to try to locate his estranged wife who had run off with another man to join a carnival.  The younger man tried to get the older man to just go to bed due to his intoxication.  This led to an argument which led to pushing and then punching.  Police separated the men for the night and later cited them for disorderly conduct for intentionally fighting with each other.  

Officers contacted an 18-year-old woman at a home on 11th Street after it was reported that she was possibly suicidal.  The woman had some superficial cuts on her legs that she admitted were self inflicted.  She denied having been suicidal though and said that she had cut herself to “distract” herself from having suicidal thoughts.  She agreed to go the emergency room for evaluation and treatment after she admitted that she was still thinking about harming herself. 

Thursday, September 2

An Anacortes man reported 3 fraudulent charges on his credit card that totaled $561. The charges appeared to be made to online businesses and one purchase was shipped to an address in Georgia.  Phone numbers associated with the fraudulent charges all came back as disconnected.  The victim cancelled his credit card and police in Georgia were advised of this incident.  

A 7-year-old boy who wandered off from his home in the 800 block of 29th Street was located a few minutes later after he walked into the bowling alley a block from his home.  The boy was fine and was reunited with his family. 

Cigarettes and a cell phone valued at $150 were reported stolen from an unlocked car parked in the 900 block of 21st Street.  A 15-year-old Anacortes girl was arrested later in the day on an unrelated matter and was found to be in possession of the stolen phone. She admitted to prowling the car and was charged with vehicle prowling. 

A witness reported a teenage girl trying door handles on cars in the 1500 block of Commercial Avenue.  An officer contacted the 15-year-old girl who was walking in the area and smelled the odor of intoxicants on her breath.  The girl initially lied about her identity and address and she was told that she was under arrest for underage drinking.  The girl then tried to run, but the officer was able to grab onto her and place her into handcuffs.  The girl was a confirmed runaway who admitted to having numerous stolen items in her backpack including the cell phone from the previous case.  The clothing she was wearing was also believed to be stolen.  The girl was taken home to her mother and advised she would be charged with MIP, vehicle prowling, possession of stolen property, and obstructing.  After police left, the girl climbed out of a window and fled.  She was located about a block from her home hiding under a bush.  She again tried to run but was caught again and then booked into juvenile detention.   

Friday, September 3

An officer who contacted a 41-year-old woman at a home in the 2000 block of H Avenue regarding a domestic disturbance smelled the strong odor of burnt marijuana inside of the house.   When asked about the odor, the woman admitted to smoking marijuana earlier and handed the officer 3 marijuana smoking pipes that had been stored in the bathroom.  She was advised that she would be receiving a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia.  The pipes were retained as evidence.
