Anacortes students join nationwide protest

An emotional protest Wednesday morning at Anacortes High School as students file past a memorial with photos of the 17 shooting victims killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

An estimated 250 students left class shortly before 10 am to join students across the country in a 17-minute protest over growing gun violence in the nation's classrooms. The protests were intended to pressure Congress to approve new gun control legislation after the Parkland massacre.

It seems clear that Congress is unlikely to give in to students demanding a ban on sales of military-style assault rifles and an increase in the minimum age to 21 to purchase guns, however, Florida last week raised the minimum age to purchase a firearm to 21 and extended the waiting period to three days
