Ham radio club named special service club

The Anacortes based Skagit Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Club has been named a Special Service Club by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL.)

Annually fewer than 10% of 2844 ARRL clubs receive the Special Service Club designation.  The award recognizes clubs that exist to go above and beyond for their communities.  They are the leaders in their Amateur Radio, who provide active training classes, publicity programs and actively pursue technical projects and operating activities.

The award will be presented 6pm, September 11, 2017 at the club’s meeting at Island Hospital, Fidalgo Room by ARRL NW Regional Director, Jim Pace.

SARECC drills weekly at 10 locations across Fidalgo Island to keep a ready status for potential community wide emergencies.

In three years SARECC has built it’s membership to 94, built a local repeater, participated in numerous community events and trained 70 new ham radio operators.  President Richard Rodriguez said, “We are please to have come so far in such a short time.  The vision of our founding members continue to provide inspiration.”
