Telephone and Internet service is slowly coming back on line in the San Juan Islands as a barge team works to identify and pull the severed cable to shallower water, according to CenturyLink, which provides the phone and Internet service.

On Friday, the San Juan County Council declared a state of emergency after some four days of little or no phone and Internet service which has left most islanders isolated from the rest of the world, communication wise.

According to a Sunday morning news release from CenturyLink, 911 service was restored Saturday night and inter-island phone service is up and running. Meanwhile, at least some service between the islands and the mainland has been restored.

CenturyLink said “fiber splicing is working around the clock, in partnership with OPALCO, for OC3 Radio function, estimate late Tuesday for additional capacity for private lines.”
