AHS in top 5 percent of schools

Anacortes High School is among the top five percent of high schools, according to rankings just published by U.S. News & World Report. AHS was ranked 30th in Washington state and #1,072 nationally in their Best High Schools 2013 rankings.

In a statement, School Superintendent Chris Borgen said, "I know I join the rest of our staff, community and parents in congratulating AHS administration and staff on a job well done."

In the U.S. News Best High Schools 2013 rankings, there are 10 Washington schools with gold medals, 45 with silver medals and 67 with bronze medals. The highly ranked International School, in the Bellevue School District, ranked at the top of the list.

AHS was one of those schools with a silver medal. It was the highest-placed school in Skagit County. Among other schools in Northwest Washington: Friday Harbor HS ranked fifth, Lopez Middle High School ranked 20th, Orcas Island HS is 25th, and Bellingham HS is at # 29.

Borgen said AHS leadership and staff continually;

  • Hold all students to high standards while providing the individual student support needed so they can reach them.
  • Provide rigorous & relevant course work tied to "world class learning standards"
  • Demonstrate Quality instruction daily resulting in student mastery of skills and standards
  • Counsel students to achieve more than they believe
  • Work in tandem with true instructional leaders to increase student achievement as well as their own professional growth
  • Function as a team of highly skilled and solution oriented educators and support
