Anacortes Family Shelter director Eric Johnson receives a check for $12,000 from Soroptimist President Barbara Larson during Sunday's open house for the just-completed family shelter, located on 27th St, just west of Commercial Ave.
The new 8,000-square-foot, 9-unit facility will house families with children. The shelter will be set up similar to an apartment building with individual, self-sufficient units, giving residents the opportunity to adapt to the environment that they will face upon leaving the shelter.
Earlier this year, a survey found 93 homeless people in Anacortes, with 58 adults and 35 children. This compares to the 75 homeless people tallied last year (36 adults and 39 children).
