Five applicants want to grow pot on the island

The state Liquor Control Board has received five applications from businesses on Fidalgo Island to grow marijuana and only one application from the island to sell it.

The lone retailer license application came from Northwest Healing Gardens, which proposes to open its store in the 15000 block of Gibralter Road in Anacortes.

A group called Emerald Evolution in Anacortes applied for three producer permits. They proposed to be located in three suites in a given building.

All but one producer applicant also applied for a processor permit. The one producer-only applicant from Skagit is called Sailone and proposes to locate in the 6000 block of Spradley Road in Anacortes.

Businesses can hold licenses to grow and process marijuana, but not to sell it. Under tyhe rules, retailers can't be involved in producing or processing.

Licensing investigators are now processing the applications. Investigators will check residency status of the applicants, criminal background checks and verify financial information. They will also check the locations of the proposed businesses to make sure they are not located within 1,000 feet of schools or other specified gathering places.

Here’s the first list of applicants from Fidalgo Island, as released Tuesday by the state Liquor Control Board.
