Over $2,000 in property damage was done during an attempt to break in to two small businesses in the Sharpes Corner area.
At 4AM on Thursday morning, APD Officers investigated an attempted burglary at two small businesses in the area of Sharpes Corner. The reporting party told officers that the suspect had fled southbound towards Oak Harbor in a light colored pickup a few minutes prior to officers’ arrival. Over $2,000 in property and product damage was reported, though nothing of value was missing from either store. Officers reviewed video surveillance and photos of the vehicle and white male suspect attempting to gain entry to the building have been disseminated via social media in an attempt to identify him. APD Officers have since spoken with the suspect. Investigation continues.

Late Sunday night, an Anacortes Police Sergeant on patrol on O Avenue observed a sedan and driver known to her. A records check of the 39-year old Anacortes man revealed that he had 4 warrants, three for driving charges; one for trespassing/harassment. The Sergeant made a traffic stop on the vehicle, informing the driver of the reason for the stop. When told about his warrants, he claimed that he only knew about one of them. He was taken into custody just after midnight on Monday morning on his warrants. A drivers check revealed that his license was suspended and he was required to have an ignition interlock device installed which he told police that he had not installed yet. He was transported to APD and later released with a copy of his driving with license suspended, operating a vehicle without ignition interlock, and warrant book and release paperwork.
Police Officers also contacted a 35-year old Oak Harbor woman in the passenger seat of the vehicle. She was identified in an effort to determine if she could drive the vehicle from the scene. It was determined that the woman had an Island County District Court Warrant for her arrest. She was taken into custody for a warrant and a search incident to arrest yielded a glass pipe containing methamphetamine residue that was concealed under her clothing. The woman was transported to APD and later released to the Oak Harbor Police on her warrant and a given a copy of a use of drug paraphernalia charging paperwork.

Just after 5AM on Monday, an APD Officer on bike patrol on R Avenue took a ride past the south end of the skate park and made contact with an individual sleeping illegally in the area. The officer knew the 49-year old, so she called him by name, telling him he needed to pack up his belongings and leave the area. The male subject initially ignored the officer’s commands to get up and leave the area. He finally got up and spit on her, then flung several beverages at her from various containers around him. Backup arrived and the man was taken into custody and transported to jail on an investigative hold for assault, resisting arrest, and unlawful possession of a prescription drug for an antibiotic pill bottle in someone else’s name found on the man at the time of arrest.
A local store representative called police on Monday afternoon to report suspicious activity across from the business in the 900 block of 37th Street. An officer arrived on scene and immediately recognized the vehicle and single female occupant, a local 51-year old woman he had encountered previously. The woman told the officer that she was there to meet with a friend and she was asked to find another place to meet, per the employee’s request. Additionally, the woman had a warrant out of Skagit County District Court. She was taken into custody without incident and booked and released on scene.

At 6:40 Tuesday morning an officer was dispatched to the 1400 block of 17th Street per the report of suspicious activity near a vehicle in the area. On scene, officers spoke with a male and female who were trying to access the locked vehicle through the driver’s side window to retrieve their cat from within. The officer ran a records check on both people and the man returned with a driving with license suspended warrant out of Mount Vernon. He was taken into custody and transported to APD. He was later released after the jail declined to accept him.
A 64-year old Anacortes woman known to police was cited for Driving With License Suspended early Tuesday evening after officers observed her driving an RV on N Avenue. The driver was contacted on 5th Street and told why she was stopped. She explained that she tried to wait for a licensed driver to take drive her to her destination, but got impatient and drove herself. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was sold to her the month prior. She was taken into custody and cited for driving with license suspended, failure to transfer title within 45 days, and given an infraction for operating a motor vehicle without insurance. She was later released from the scene.

On Wednesday afternoon, a local woman came to APD to retrieve her backpack and was later booked in the Skagit County Jail. APD personnel identified the woman in the front lobby and determined that the 30-year old had a felony warrant. She was taken into custody by officers and transported to jail without incident.
A 55-year old Anacortes woman was arrested for DUI on Wednesday evening after police received a report of a minivan traveling westbound on SR 20, nearly hitting the guardrail several times. An officer followed the vehicle for several blocks within city limits and observed several infractions, including failure to use a turn signal and running a stop sign at 21st and Commercial where the officer ultimately stopped the vehicle. The driver smelled slightly of alcohol and had a difficult time maintaining a conversation with the officer who was investigating on scene. The woman later admitted to drinking alcohol and was taken into custody after performing poorly on roadside sobriety tests. When taken to the station, she submitted a breath sample that showed her blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit to safely operate a motor vehicle. She was issued a ticket for driving through the stop sign and cited for DUI and driving on her occupational license. She was later transported to friend’s home in the city.

A 29-year old Burlington man was arrested for Driving With License Suspended on Thursday evening after an APD Officer observed him driving 13 mph over the posted speed limit on D Avenue. The driver admitted to not having a valid license and was cited and released from the scene after agreeing to show up for a court date later in the month.
